The Cotton Districts Convalescent Fund and the Barnes Samaritan Charity - Main Policies

  1. The area of benefit covered by both Charities is the Counties of Lancashire and Greater Manchester; the District of Calderdale in the County of West Yorkshire; the District of Craven in the County of North Yorkshire; the Districts of Macclesfield and Warrington in the County of Cheshire; and the District of High Peak in the County of Derbyshire

  2. Purposes

    Cotton Districts –
To provide for people convalescing from illness or suffering from permanent disability a week’s subsidised holiday, half board, at the Charity’s nominated hotels in Blackpool and Lytham St Anne’s or with a contribution from the Charity of £200, a holiday elsewhere in the UK *
*NB. The cost of the holiday must be invoiced to the applicant as the Charity does not take on any liability with the provider for all or part of the cost of the holiday. Upon receipt of the invoice from the applicant, together with proof of payment, the Charity will send the applicant a cheque for £200
If the applicant is too ill to take the holiday without a Carer, support will be given also to the Carer.

    Barnes –
To provide a regular income* (£45 per month) for people in financial need suffering from permanent or temporary illness, disease or disability subject to the satisfactory completion of Income and Medical Forms supported by a ‘sponsor’ such as a Doctor or Social Worker confirming the medical and financial circumstances.
*NB Review of applicant’s situation normally every 3 years (Medical and Financial forms to be completed again). Grant can be restricted to 1 or 2 years with review.
One-off grants may also be made in addition to regular income payments, usually to assist in the purchase of specific items of equipment related to a disability.

  3. Governance
The two Charities are combined for governance; administrative; and financial purposes.

  4. Other support
Whilst the primary aim of the Barnes Charity is to make payments to support local people making individual applications, payments may also be made to Charities working in support of people who could benefit from Cotton Districts and Barnes assistance subject to that Charity (particularly those with significant reserves) making some contribution (preferably, at least, matched funding). Beneficiaries of this assistance must live within the geographical area covered by the Barnes and Cotton Districts Charities.
